How to blur a photo
1
Drop your photo
It becomes the page at its own size, already blurred to 30, with the Blur slider open next to it.
2
Pick the amount
Drag right for a stronger blur and left for a lighter one. Every change shows on the photo while you drag.
3
Download
The photo is saved at full size, as the type it came in and under its own name. No watermark.
Blur an image as much as you need
The whole photo is blurred, from edge to edge. What changes is how much, and that is one slider.
Saved at full size: our 4032 by 3024 sample came back 4032 by 3024. Blurred, its 2.0 MB JPG weighed 405 KB.
A PNG is saved as a PNG and a WebP as a WebP. A moving GIF stays a GIF and keeps moving.
Your original file is left as it was. Slide all the way to Off and the sharp photo is back before you save.

Questions
How do I blur a photo?+
Drop the photo on this page, or tap the drop area and pick it. It opens in the Compix editor already blurred a little, with the Blur slider beside it. Drag the slider to the amount you want, then press Download.
Is this photo blur free?+
Yes. You do not need an account, and the saved photo has no watermark.
What do the numbers on the slider mean?+
They run from Off to 100, and each is a share of the photo's own size, so 30 softens a small photo as much as a large one. On our 4032 by 3024 sample picture, 30 is a blur radius of about 41 pixels.
Why does it open at 30?+
So you see the effect straight away. At 30 the shapes and colors are still clear, but small print is not: the chalkboard in our farm stand sample can no longer be read. Drag left for less, right for more, or all the way left for Off.
Can I blur only part of a photo?+
Not here. The slider blurs the whole photo, edge to edge. There is no brush for a face or a license plate, and no setting that keeps the subject sharp while the background goes soft.
Do the edges fade to white?+
No. A plain blur pulls in the empty space around a photo, which leaves a pale haze along its sides. Here every edge and corner keeps the photo's own colors, at any amount.
Is the photo saved at full size?+
Yes. Our 4032 by 3024 sample was saved at 4032 by 3024, under its own name, as the same kind of file it came in. On an iPhone or iPad there is a ceiling, set out below.
Which files can I blur?+
JPG, PNG and WebP photos, each saved as the type it came in. A moving GIF stays a GIF and keeps moving. If you drop several photos, the first is blurred and you are told how many were left out.
Why is the blurred file smaller?+
Fine detail takes the most room in a photo file, and a blur smooths it away. Our 2.0 MB sample JPG, a farm stand drawn for this page, was saved at 405 KB with the blur at 30, and 332 KB at 100. A camera photo shrinks by its own amount.
Can I add words over the blurred photo?+
Yes. The photo opens in the editor, so you can add a title or a quote from Text and it stays sharp on top. A blurred photo makes a calm backdrop for words.
Does it work on an iPhone?+
It is made to, in Safari and in the other iPhone browsers, with two differences there. The blur is worked out by the page itself, so a large photo takes longer to save than on a computer. And those browsers draw at most about 16.7 million pixels, so a 24 or 48 megapixel photo is blurred and saved there at about 4700 by 3500.
Are my photos uploaded?+
No. The photo is read and blurred inside this browser tab, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server for that. If you sign in to keep a design, it is saved online with its pictures, so it opens on any device.
