How to convert MP4 to GIF

The GIF plays the clip as long as it runs, then starts again on its own. It needs no play button and has no sound.

Full size, or 720p

The GIF is the size of your MP4, up to 1920 pixels on its longest side. From a video bigger than 720p, pick 720p in the Download menu for a smaller file: this 1080p lighthouse then comes out at 1280 by 720.

Named after your file

The GIF keeps the name of the MP4, so it is easy to find in your downloads: rocket.mp4 is saved as rocket.gif.
The GIF is made at 12 frames a second, or 24 if you pick 24 fps in the Download menu.
The MP4 you dropped is left as it was; the GIF is made beside it in this tab, and nothing is uploaded.

Why turn an MP4 into a GIF

An MP4 waits for someone to press play, and some places will not play one at all. A GIF is a picture that moves: it starts by itself, loops, and shows up wherever a picture can, in a chat, an email, a document or a forum post. For a few seconds of video that should just be seen, a GIF is the easy way to share it.

How do I convert MP4 to GIF?+
Drop your MP4 on the box at the top of this page, or click the box to choose it. It opens in the Compix editor as a page of its own, at its size and as long as it runs, with the Download menu already on GIF. Press Download and the GIF is saved, named after your MP4.
Is the MP4 to GIF converter free?+
Yes. There is no account to make and no watermark on the GIF.
How long can the GIF be?+
As long as your MP4: the GIF runs for the whole clip. A GIF of a video is a bigger file than the MP4 it came from, so keep it to the few seconds you want: pull in the ends of its page in the timeline.
Can I trim the video first?+
Yes. The MP4 is a page in the timeline below the editor. Drag the handle at either end of the page to cut the start or the end, and the GIF holds only what is left.
What size is the GIF?+
The size of your MP4, up to 1920 pixels on its longest side: a bigger video is made smaller to fit, its shape kept. From a video bigger than 720p, pick 720p in the Download menu for a smaller file: a 1080p clip then comes out at 1280 by 720.
How smooth is the GIF?+
It is made at 12 frames a second, or 24 if you choose 24 fps in the Download menu.
Does the GIF loop?+
Yes. It plays over and over, with no play button to press.
Does the GIF keep the sound?+
No. A GIF is pictures only, so the sound of the MP4 is left out.
Can I add text to the GIF?+
Yes. Pick a line of words in the Text panel, type yours and place it on the video, and it is in every frame of the GIF.
Can I convert several MP4 files at once?+
One at a time. If you drop several, the first one opens on its own page. Download its GIF, then come back to this page for the next.
Are my files uploaded?+
No. The MP4 is played and the GIF made in this browser tab, on your device, so nothing is sent to a server for that. If you sign in to keep a design, it is saved online with its videos, so it opens on any device.
Can I convert MP4 to GIF on my phone?+
