How to convert an image to PNG
1
Drop your pictures
JPG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP or PNG, one or a batch, mixed as they come. Each gets a page of its own, at its own size.
2
Pick the format
The Download menu starts on PNG. To go the other way, click File type until it says JPG, WebP or PDF.
3
Download
One picture saves as one file, a batch as one zip, every file named after the picture it came from.
Convert to PNG, or from PNG
A PNG stores every pixel as it is, so it is usually bigger than a JPG, WebP or AVIF of the same picture: our lemonade stand went from 66 KB as a WebP to 1.1 MB as a PNG. From a BMP it is usually much smaller: our garden chart went from 4.1 MB to 101 KB.
Converting does not cut anything out: a picture with a background keeps it. Only clear parts already in the file, as in a sticker saved as WebP, AVIF, GIF or PNG, stay clear.
An iPhone or iPad works with pictures of up to about 16 megapixels, so a bigger photo is brought down to that size first, through one more JPEG save for a JPG or HEIC photo. On a computer, pictures up to 64 megapixels are kept whole.

Questions
How do I convert an image to PNG?+
Drop it on this page, or several at once. They open in the Compix editor, a page each, with the Download menu already on PNG. Press Download: one picture saves as a PNG, a batch as one zip.
Is this PNG converter free?+
Yes. There is nothing to pay, no trial and no account, and no mark is added to your pictures.
Can I convert to PNG without signing up?+
Yes. Converting and downloading need no account, no email and no sign-up.
Which files can I convert to PNG?+
Any picture your browser opens: JPG, WebP, AVIF, GIF and BMP, mixed in one drop. A moving GIF gives one PNG of its first frame. HEIC photos from an iPhone do not open in most browsers on a computer, so save them as JPG first.
Can I convert many files to PNG at once?+
Yes. Select them all and drop them together, or pick them all when you browse. One Download gives one zip, every PNG named after its picture; a second file with the same name gets -2.
Will converting to PNG lose quality?+
On a computer, no: the PNG stores exactly the picture you see, at its own size, and saving it again takes nothing away. It cannot add back detail a JPG already smoothed away. On an iPhone or iPad, a picture bigger than about 16 megapixels is brought down to that size first, so it loses a little there.
Does a PNG keep a transparent background?+
Yes, when the picture has one: the clear parts of a WebP, AVIF, GIF or PNG stay clear in the PNG. A JPG has none to keep, and converting does not cut out a background.
What happens to clear parts if I save as JPG or WebP?+
They are filled in: white, or the background color you picked. A JPG cannot be see-through at all, and the WebP saved here is filled in too, so keep PNG for anything with a clear background.
Can I convert PNG to PDF?+
Yes. Drop the PNGs, click File type in the Download menu until it says PDF, and press Download: one PDF with a page for each picture.
Why is my PNG bigger than the picture I dropped?+
A PNG stores every pixel as it is, while JPG, WebP and AVIF pack a picture small. When we tried it, a 66 KB WebP of a lemonade stand made a 1.1 MB PNG. A BMP goes the other way: our 4.1 MB BMP chart made a 101 KB PNG.
Can I convert to PNG on my phone?+
Yes. Tap the drop box and choose pictures from your photo library or your files; each gets a page. Then tap Share and Download the work, and your phone saves the PNG, or a zip of them.
Is there a limit?+
No daily cap and no set number of pictures, because your own browser does the work; a big batch just takes longer. The limit is the size of each picture: about 16 megapixels on an iPhone or iPad, and on a computer 64 megapixels or 16,384 pixels on the long side. A bigger picture is brought down to fit.
Are my pictures uploaded?+
No. They open in this browser tab, on your own device, and the PNGs are made there. Nothing is sent to a server for that. If you sign in to save your work, it is saved online with its pictures, so it opens on any device.
