How to convert AVIF to PNG
1
Add your AVIF files
Drag in one AVIF image or a whole batch, or click to browse. Each opens as its own page, at its own size.
2
Check them, or touch them up
The Download menu is already on PNG, every page, with Transparent on. Add a word or a mark first if you like.
3
Download the PNG files
One image saves as one PNG, a batch as one zip, each PNG named after the AVIF it came from.
What happens to your AVIF images
A PNG is much bigger than the AVIF it came from, as AVIF squeezes hard and PNG keeps every pixel: our six AVIF images, about 70 KB together, made 700 KB of PNGs.
AVIF opens where your browser can show it: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and a recent Safari (16.4 or later on a Mac, iOS 16 or later on an iPhone or iPad). WebP, GIF, JPG and BMP work too, mixed in one drop.
What people turn into PNGs
More and more websites send pictures as AVIF, so a picture saved from the web may be an .avif file that your app will not open. As a PNG, it will.

Questions
What is AVIF?+
AVIF is a picture format made to be very small for the web, based on the AV1 video format. A photo saved as AVIF is often a fraction of its JPG size, so more and more websites send their pictures that way.
What is PNG?+
PNG is a picture format that keeps every pixel exactly and can have see-through parts. Almost every app, browser, printer and program opens it, which is why logos, screenshots and graphics are so often PNGs.
When should I use AVIF, and when PNG?+
Use AVIF on a website, where small files load fast. Use PNG anywhere else: to edit a picture, to put it in a document or a slide, to print it, or to upload it to a form or an app that does not take AVIF.
How do I convert AVIF to PNG?+
Drop the AVIF on this page, or several at once. They open in the Compix editor, a page each, with the Download menu already on PNG. Press Download: one image saves as a PNG, several as one zip of PNGs.
Is it free to convert AVIF to PNG?+
Yes. No account, no watermark, no payment and no trial, and no daily limit. Convert as many images as you like and download the PNGs.
Does it keep the transparent background?+
Yes. The Transparent switch in the Download menu starts on, so an AVIF with a clear background becomes a PNG with the same clear background, soft edges and shadows included. Turn it off for a white background instead.
Will the PNG lose quality?+
No. The PNG holds the AVIF's picture at its own size, pixel for pixel, as your browser shows it. PNG does not squeeze, so nothing more is lost on the way.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the AVIF?+
AVIF squeezes a picture very hard to make it small for the web, while PNG keeps every pixel. In our test, six AVIF images of about 70 KB together made 700 KB of PNGs, ten times as much. A photo grows the most, often much more than that; a logo or a sticker much less.
Can I convert multiple AVIF files to PNG at once?+
Yes. Drop them all together: each is a page, and one Download saves them as PNGs in one zip, each named after the AVIF it came from. Two files with the same name get -2 on the second.
Are my files secure when converting AVIF to PNG?+
Yes. They open inside this browser tab, on your own device, and the PNGs are made there. Nothing is sent to a server. Sign in to save your work: your designs are then kept in this browser.
Do I need to install any software?+
No. It works in your browser. AVIF opens in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and in a recent Safari: 16.4 or later on a Mac, iOS 16 or later on an iPhone or iPad. An older Safari cannot read AVIF: the app says the file couldn't be opened and leaves it out, so open this page in one of the others.
Can I convert AVIF to PNG on my phone?+
Yes. Tap the drop area and pick the images from your photos or files. They open a page each. Tap Share, then Download the work, and the PNG, or a zip of them, is saved to your phone.
Is there a limit on file size?+
There is no set file size and no set number of images: the converting happens in your browser. A long stack of large images takes longer to open and to save. On an iPhone or iPad, an image over about 16 megapixels comes in at about 16, the largest picture the browser there can work with. On a computer, only an image over 64 megapixels, or one over 16,384 pixels long, is made smaller.
