How to convert JPG to PNG
1
Drop your JPG files
Drag in one JPG or a whole batch, or click to browse. Each opens as its own page, at its own size.
2
Check them, or touch them up
The Download menu is already on PNG, every page. Add a word or a mark first if you like.
3
Download your PNGs
One image saves as one PNG, several as one zip, each PNG named after the JPG it came from.
What happens to your JPG images
A PNG is much bigger than the JPG it came from, as PNG keeps every pixel without squeezing: our six JPG images, 682 KB together, made 5.4 MB of PNGs, each about 7 to 9 times its JPG.
A JPG has no see-through parts, so its background comes along into the PNG. Converting does not cut anything out.
On an iPhone or iPad, a photo over about 16 megapixels, like the 24 megapixel photos of a recent iPhone, is made smaller to about 16 first, and that smaller copy is saved once more as a JPG on the way. On a computer, a photo up to 64 megapixels stays whole.
What people turn into PNGs

Questions
How do I convert JPG to PNG?+
Drop the JPG on this page, or several at once. They open in the Compix editor, a page each, with the Download menu already on PNG. Press Download: one image saves as a PNG, several as one zip of PNGs.
Is this JPG to PNG converter free?+
Yes. No account, no watermark, no payment and no trial. Convert as many images as you like and download the PNGs.
Is JPEG the same as JPG?+
Yes. JPG and JPEG are the same format with two spellings of the file ending, .jpg and .jpeg. Both work here, and the PNG is the same either way.
What is the difference between JPG and PNG?+
A JPG squeezes a photo small by smoothing away detail you mostly do not see, and it squeezes again every time it is saved. A PNG keeps every pixel exactly, so it is bigger, and it can have see-through parts.
Will converting JPG to PNG lose quality?+
On a computer, no. The PNG holds every pixel as the JPG shows it, at the same size. It cannot bring back detail the JPG already smoothed away, but nothing more is lost, now or when you edit the PNG and save it again. On an iPhone or iPad, a photo over about 16 megapixels, like the 24 megapixel photos of a recent iPhone, is made smaller to about 16 first, and that smaller copy is saved once more as a JPG, so a little detail is lost there.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?+
No. A JPG has no see-through parts, so its background, a white wall or a sky, comes along into the PNG. Converting does not cut anything out.
Why is the PNG bigger than the JPG?+
PNG keeps every pixel without squeezing, while JPG is made small. In our test, six JPG images of 682 KB together made 5.4 MB of PNGs, each about 7 to 9 times its JPG.
When should I use PNG instead of JPG?+
Use PNG for a picture you will edit and save again, for one with words or sharp lines on it, and wherever an app, a form or a print shop asks for PNG. For a photo you only want to send or post, JPG is smaller.
What does PNG stand for?+
Portable Network Graphics. It is a picture format that keeps every pixel, opens in almost every app, and can have see-through parts.
Are phone photos turned the right way?+
Yes. A phone often stores a photo on its side with a note saying which way is up. The PNG comes out the right way up, at the photo's own size. It holds only the picture: the phone, the date and the place the photo was taken stay behind.
Can I convert many JPG files at once?+
Yes. Drop them all together: each is a page, and one Download saves them as PNGs in one zip, each named after the JPG it came from. Two files with the same name get -2 on the second.
Can I convert JPG to PNG on my phone?+
Yes. Tap the drop area and pick the images from your photos or files. They open a page each. Tap Share, then Download the work, and the PNG, or a zip of them, is saved to your phone. On an iPhone, a photo over about 16 megapixels comes in smaller, and that copy is saved once more as a JPG on the way.
What other files can I convert to PNG?+
Any picture your browser can open: WebP, AVIF, GIF and BMP as well as JPG, mixed in one drop. A moving GIF gives its first frame. HEIC files from an iPhone do not open in most browsers on a computer, so save them as JPG first.
Is there a limit?+
There is no daily limit and no set number of images: the converting happens in your browser. A long stack of large photos takes longer to open and to save. On an iPhone or iPad, an image over about 16 megapixels comes in at about 16, the largest picture the browser there can work with. On a computer, only an image over 64 megapixels, or one over 16,384 pixels long, is made smaller.
Are my images uploaded?+
No. They open inside this browser tab, on your own device, and the PNGs are made there. Nothing is sent to a server. Sign in to save your work: your designs are then kept in this browser.
